See how a “diverging diamond interchange”— proposed for the Shrewsbury exit of I-83 — works

If you use the Shrewsbury interchange of Interstate 83, you know how jammed it can get, especially at rush hour or the holidays.

Last week, transportation planners talked to Shrewsbury Township officials about an improvement for Exit 4. They have proposed a ”diverging diamond interchange.”

It’s hard to describe how this interchange would work because it includes cross overs, and drivers would be using the opposite side of the road. I found a video on Shrewsbury Township’s web site that takes you on a ride through one of these interchanges in Missouri, and I think it gives you a better idea of how it would work.

Take a look here:

A reader also shared this link with me, and it gives more information about the design as well as a list of places across the country that have this kind of interchange.

The idea is that diverging diamond interchange would allow for free-flowing left turns off of Route 851. That would allow traffic to get onto I-83 easier without the backup.

What do you think of the idea? Do you think this would work for the Shrewsbury Exit?
